Precision Tuning: 440 Hz Standard and 432 Hz Resonance

Standard A=440 Hz: Technical Precision

The standard pitch for modern instruments is A=440 Hz. Achieving this industry benchmark demands immense skill, precision, and a deep understanding of acoustical physics to establish perfect equal temperament and stability. When you choose 440 Hz, you receive a tuning that meets the bright, contemporary tone expected in concerts and professional recordings.

Exploring the 432 Hz Difference

Beyond the standard, we offer the specialized option of A=432 Hz, often referred to as "Verdi's A." This frequency is believed by many musicians and researchers to be mathematically consistent with nature and the human body.

When tuned to 432 Hz, the piano's overall pitch is subtly lowered. This subtle shift often results in a sound that many listeners describe as warmer, clearer, more relaxing, and inherently more harmonious.

Key Benefits of 432 Hz Tuning:

  • Reduced Stress: The lower, more resonant frequency is reported to create a calming listening experience.
  • Enhanced Clarity: Notes often sound more distinct, allowing the instrument's natural harmonics to shine.
  • Deeper Resonance: The entire instrument can feel more vibrant and full, especially in the bass register.
  • Historical Integrity: Reconnect your instrument to historical tuning standards favored by classical masters.

Frequently Asked Piano Tuning Questions

How much does piano tuning cost?
Standard in-home tuning is $175 (includes travel anywhere in my normal service area: Chelmsford, Lowell, Nashua NH, Westford, Dracut, Tyngsborough, and surrounding towns).

Pitch raise service is included at this rate.
What about 432 Hz tuning? Should I get it?
432 Hz means tuning A to 432 cycles per second instead of the modern international standard A=440 Hz. Some people feel it sounds more “natural” or relaxing.

The difference is very small (about ⅓ of a semitone flat). However:
• Nearly all sheet music, recordings, teachers, and other instruments use 440 Hz.
• A 432 Hz piano will sound noticeably flat when playing along with anyone else who is not tuned to 432Hz
• Most piano teachers and institutions will ask you to return to 440 Hz.

I’m happy to tune to 432 Hz (or 442, 444, historical pitches, etc.) at the regular $175 rate — just let me know. But 99% of my clients stay with the standard 440 Hz for compatibility.

No, 432 Hz will not make your piano stay in tune longer or sound inherently better — stability and tone come from regular maintenance and humidity control.
How often should my piano be tuned in Massachusetts/New England?
Because of our extreme humidity swings (dry heated winters + humid summers), most pianos need tuning every 6–12 months. Twice a year is ideal for heavily played or high-end instruments.
What is a pitch raise?
If a piano hasn’t been tuned in 2+ years, it can drop 50–100+ cents flat. A single regular tuning would put too much stress on the strings and pinblock, so we do a quick “pitch raise” pass first, then the fine tuning. This gives a much more stable, longer-lasting result.
Do you offer regulation, voicing, or repairs?
Yes! In addition to tuning, I provide regulation, voicing, minor repairs and more. Just ask when you book.
